Anita Blake, books 10 and 11
Posted by Chantal | 4:21 p.m. | Hamilton, other, Paranormal | 6 comments »Okay, well now I know what happened to turn Anita from Ms. no-casual-sex to Ms. I'll-screw-anyone-with-a-penis.
The Ardeur (or whatever its called) Hmm, boy oh boy.
I must say that I am with the group of people who isn't too fond of the change. The books I have read since 'it' happened have been rather plotless. Sex filled, but plotless.
Lets see in two back to back books Anita has had sex with Micah, Richard, JC, Asher (kinda), and Jason.
I want to see JC and Asher go at it. Yeah!
I don't like Richard anymore. What a damn baby. He is So self centered. "Ohh, poor me, wah wah. " Jeez. I bet he even sits to pee.
I still lurve Jean-Claude. As far as I have read, Anita has not given him her blood. Poor JC :( I'll give him my blood. Come on JC honey. Let me take care of you. I'll take care of you real good.
Micah! I don't know. He seems rather spineless. Just once, I'd like him to say no to Anita.
Asher is such a tortured Hero. My favourite kind.
Jason, Nathaniel and all the other shifters...I like them. :)
Anita Blake, books 7, 8 and 9

Just like my last Anita Blake post, this is not a review. I still like the series, and I don;t regret starting it. It;s been great entertainment and I like Anita very much.
I have just finished Obsidian Butterfly, and I'm told that it is the last good book in the series.
Narcissus In Chains is in my TBR, but I'm a tad afraid to start it. On one hand I'm dying to find out what happens to Anita to turn her around so much and at the same time make so many turn against the series. On the other hand I like this series, and I don't want to see a good thing go to crap. Even though it apparently already has gone to crap. Do I stop now and say that this is a series I like, or do I go and then end up saying that this is a series I used to like?
Who know, I may keep on saying that this is a series that I like.
I wont know till I read.
Decisions, decisions.
I do want to mention that Obsidian Butterfly was the goriest book out of all of them for me, so far. Some scenes were very hard to get through. It had newborn babies being eaten, a child being tortured, and a teen being molested.
Even Stephen King doesn't write that kind of stuff in such detail.
It was amazing to read. I gasped out loud and had to put the book down and stop for a while.
I must say that as gory as the scenes were, they were well written. There was enough description to keep with the horror theme of the book, but not so much that a reader had to stop reading indefinitely.
Oh, and I notice that a lot of fans picture Anita looking like Selma Hayek. Not me. In my head she is a lot thinner and prettier than Selma. To me they have the same hair, but thats it.
Anita Blake, Vampire hunter is a series that I started based on curiosity. People seem to have a real hate-on for the later books, so I had to see what all the fuss was about. I had heard of the author, and even tried to read one of her books. It didn't go well. It was called Mistral's Kiss, you may read what I had to say about it here.
This is not going to be a review post as much as it's going to be an update/progress report on how I feel about the books so far. If you have not read any of the books, then you wont know what I am talking about, but if you have read them, then please add your thoughts on the books up to this point. If you are just starting the series, then be warned that this post has spoilers up to book 6, The Killing Dance.
After I finished book one, Guilty Pleasures, I thought that it was a good book. It had a good plot, although it was full on inconsistencies, and Anita was repetitive in her dialogue. I was told that it just gets worse with each book, but I'm pleased to say that the inconsistencies (at least for me) stopped at the first book.
I told myself that I wasn't going to run out and read all the books. Oh, I lied. Big time. If you check out my read list, you'll see that I read the last 3 back to back. It's not that this is the best series that I have read, I have read better. The truth is that I wanted to know who Anita would sleep with first. I was a tad worried that it would be a boring scene. That happened to me with Janet Evanovich's Plum series. I was waiting and waiting for Stephanie to sleep with Ranger, and when it finally happened it was pretty anti climatic.
That didn't happen here. It was a good scene. Minus having such pale skin, and being a dead guy, Jean-Claude is hot.
I was rooting for Anita to sleep with Jean-Claude first, but then I felt really bad for Richard.
I keep going back and forth on my feelings about Richard. At first I didn't trust him at all. Then I liked him better than Jean-Claude, then I liked Jean-Claude better because Richard was acting so wimpy, then I went back to liking Richard. Agh!
Anita is such a kick ass chick (and she would HATE me calling her a chick, lol) even thought I like Richard at the moment I don't see them being a good couple. I think Jean-Claude understands her better. Anita may not need protection, but I feel that Jean-Claude can protected her better. I don't see Jean-Claude losing control and physically hurting Anita the way Richard has. Having said that, I don't think Jean-Claude loves her as deeply as Richard does.
I'm betting that my entire opinion about that will change as I read on though.
I love all the characters in Anita's world. They are as interesting and exciting as Anita is.
Willie the Vampire, Dorph, Stephen, Jason, Ronnie and especially Larry. I enjoy them all. I'm having fun trying to figure out who is truly loyal, and who is going to be the next betrayer.
Something I have heard about the newer Anita Blake books is that Anita turns into a big ole slut, and sleeps with pretty much every male in the books. I am very curious to find out why shes doing that. She spent the first 5 books saying that sex is special and that she wont do it again before she gets married. I just started Burnt Offering, and she is dating Jean-Claude, probably sleeping with him...I'm not sure, as I am only on chapter 2, but I assume she is sleeping with him. It will be neat to see how she goes from being torn between 2 men to banging everyone with a penis.
Something interesting, is that at my library these books are put into several different categories. The first 5 are listed as Horror, then book 6 is romance, right now I'm on book 7 and they have it as Fantasy. Book 8 is in front of my as well, and it is listed as Fantasy, too.
Ames was right, these books are addictive! It's not a bad addiction like smoking, nose picking and JR Ward's BDB books are. At least it's not a bad addiction YET. I'm still hoping that y'all are wrong about the newer books being bad.
So yeah, I'm liking this series :)
Mistral's kiss by Laurell K Hamilton

Grade: DNF
The time has come for Meredith Gentry to put aside her detective work and
fulfill her ultimate obligation to the world of Faerie - where her efforts to
conceive an heir to the throne of the Unseelie Court are crucial to restoring
magic, and life itself, to the fey kingdom. And though her quest may be rife
with pleasures, the shadows of intrigue continue to suffuse the royal court…and
sabotage may lurk at any turn. While the Unseelie Mound reawakens in the dead
gardens, powerful curses are at work. Merry's uncle, the King of Light and
Illusion, schemes to accuse her immortal guardsmen of heinous crimes. And
Merry's own command of magic has turned wildly and dangerously unpredictable. As
plots and counterplots are hatched, and strategies and subterfuges played out,
the destiny of an entire world turns upon the fortunes of Merry Gentry: object
of obsession, target of treachery, pawn of uncertain fate.
It opened with a really odd dream sequence that I skipped through after the second page. Then we find out that Meredith has 15 bodyguards who are also her lover that she has sex with all day and night in hopes of getting pregnant. One of her lovers is a 4 foot guy with eyes so huge they take up his whole face. Another guy only has one eye. Another one is green.
When she has sex, she and her partner, and it seems everyone around them glows and different coloured lines shoot out of their bodies.
Mistral, I guess he is the Hero of the book, kisses her so badly that she gags on his tongue.
I made it to page 60 before I closed the book forever. I wont even bother jotting this one down in my books read in '07 list.
