Succubus on top by Richelle Mead

Published by Kensington Books
Why I read this: I read the first one in the series and thought it was really good.

Love hurts, and no one knows it better than Georgina Kincaid. If she so much as kisses her new boyfriend, she’ll drain his life force. Georgina is a succubus—a demon who draws her power from other men’s pleasure. Admittedly, the shapeshifting and immortality perks are terrific, and yes, Georgina did choose to join the ranks of hell centuries ago. But it seems completely unfair that a she-demon whose purpose is seduction can’t get hot and heavy with the one mortal who knows and accepts her for who she is.

It’s not just her personal life that’s in chaos. Doug, Georgina’s co-worker at a local bookstore, has been exhibiting bizarre behavior, and Georgina suspects that something far more demonic than double espressos is at work. She could use help finding out, but Bastien, an irresistibly charming incubus and her best immortal friend, is preoccupied in the suburbs with corrupting an ultra-conservative talk radio star—and giving Georgina some highly distracting come-hither vibes. Georgina is going to have to work solo on this one—and fast because soon, Doug’s life won’t be the only one on the line…

Something happened while I was reading this book. You see, I started off really liking Georgina. I enjoyed her a lot in the first book, but that really changed with this one. By the end of Succubus on top I had a real big problem with Georgina. I don't know if it's the fact that she smokes drugs, or his a habitual cheater, but I don't like her anymore.

I'll tell you what I mean about the cheating. Before she became a Succubus she cheated on her husband. Thats why she became an immortal. Her actions put her husband into such a depression that he nearly killed himself. In order to save him any more pain, she sold her soul. In return for wiping her memory away from her husband, she would become a Succubus. Cheating on her husband is something she showed a lot of regret for in the first book. So, why did she cheat on Seth?!?! It's understood that she must sleep with mortals in order to survive, however, when she slept with one of her immortal friends it was NOT to compete her Succubus duties.

I'm trying to remember that even though Succubus on top is sold in the romance section, it is not a romance. Otherwise this book would be a big fat F for the cheating alone.

All of the players from Succubus Blues are this book, and that made me happy. I liked all the secondary characters, and I'd like to see them again in future books.

I'm going to give Succubus on top a C+. Getting past my issues with pot smoker/cheater Georgina, I did like the story. It wasn't as interesting as the first book, but it did have some mystery to it. The take down of an immortal bad guy, as well as helping an Incubus to take down a righteous annoying mortal.

I look forward to seeing what happenes with the relationship between Georgina and Seth. Personally, I think he is too good for her.

Read my review of Succubus Blues.

Hmm...I don't know if I want to read this now. The cheating and the drugs is not my cuppa.

Hi Amy, do read the first one at least. It's very good.

Oh no! that is definitively not a book for me then. In that case, I'm staying far away. Me will read the first one though. I hate urban fantasy, sigh. Couldn't they be more romance-y?

That is exactly what will drive me crazy about a story - she gave up her soul to stop her ex husband's hurt but then cheats on her current love without any qualms. If there was angst and tearing of hair and such going on then I could cope but it sounds like it just happened. Nope. Fatal flaw by author.

Even knowing the book wasn't a romance I would have had a problem with her motivation. As much as the LKH books have gone berserk, the first 6 books still hold what a great 'fantasy/horror/urban lit' should be like. Talk about angst.

    Hi ladies,

As flawed as this one was, I do hope you read the first book, Succubus Blues.
I hope that the third instalment (Out in October, I think) is better than this one was.

I just finished this one yesterday. I did not like the whole cheating thing, but will probably still read the next one if the library gets it. (I checked this one and the last one out at the library. If they do not get the third one, I do not now if i will read it.)
I did like the Seth compromise at the end just wish they had not ended the book so soon ;)

    Hi Kris,

Yeah, that compromise was pretty cool, and sexy!
